Archive: 1990 before last Rhondda pit closed

It is 25 years since the last pit in the Rhondda, Mardy Colliery, closed.

The final 300 men had their last shift on 21 December 1990, in a valley which once employed more than 4,000 men.

In the days leading up to it miner Bryn Davies, then 40, contemplated what the future held, along with his wife Olivia, for a BBC documentary.

The couple went on to run a pub and are now stewards of a social club in nearby Ferndale.
