Leadhill miners create UK's first subscription library

The first subscription library in the UK opened 275 years ago.

Leadhills Miners Library was established by and for miners in the Southern Uplands village.

John Crawford, from the Leadhills Heritage Trust, says that it charts the development of reading through the years and provided a model for other areas to open up this learning opportunity to the working classes.
