Repair work begins on Captain Scott's RRS Discovery

Maintenance work to the masts and rigging of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition ship, the RRS Discovery, has begun.

The first stage of the nine-month £350,000 repair programme involved the removal of the ship's smaller masts, for repairs, after deterioration was found in a survey in 2012.

Dundee Heritage Trust, which owns the ship, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise an initial £40,000.

The ship will be closed to the public for three weeks while the work is carried out.
