Alphonse Mucha art nouveau exhibition opens in Glasgow

A new exhibition celebrating the work of Alphonse Mucha and his influence on Glasgow's art nouveau artists opens at Kelvingrove.

The father of art nouveau was a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and The Four.

Who influenced who? Both were influenced by the Japanese style of working with print, thanks to a relaxation of trade rules with Japan, and the industrial revolution which made lithographic print more widely available.

Pippa Stephenson, curator of European art at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum says the display, in conjunction with the Mucha Trust and the Mucha Foundation, shows just how clearly artistic ideals were exchanged across Europe at the time.

Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty is open at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum from 8 October until 19 February 2017.
