New project records 'stripped back' Robert Burns songs

Think you know the work of Scotland's Bard? Think again.

Glasgow University has recorded the songs of Robert Burns as they would have been performed in his day.

Much of his work would have heard in the drawing rooms of the middle class, accompanied by harpsichord and viola, as Burns tried to earn a living from publishing work.

Professor Kirsteen McCue, of the university's Centre for Robert Burns Studies, said: "They were quite expensive at the time and we wanted to explore what it would have meant for people in Burns’ day to have bought these songs."
