Shoppers in Scotland pay 5p for carrier bags

A charge on single-use carrier bags has come into effect in Scotland whether the bag is plastic, paper or made from plant-based material.

The Scottish government has introduced legislation that requires all retailers to charge at least 5p for "a single-use carrier bag".

The move is aimed at combating Scotland's litter problem and reduce the environmental damage caused by plastic bags.

Wales and Northern Ireland have already introduced charges and England will follow next year.

BBC Scotland's environment correspondent David Miller reports.
