Alex Salmond 'one of the best politicians in Europe'

Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, has described Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond as "one of the most talented politicians... in Europe".

Speaking to the Today programme's James Naughtie as he looked back over the politician's career, Mr Nelson saved special praise for Mr Salmond's use of language while in office.

Alan Taylor of The Herald also noted Mr Salmond as being "a performer from a very young age".

Former deputy leader of the SNP, Margo MacDonald, explained that the first minister has created a more "professional party... in the image of New Labour".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 14 January 2014.
