Thomas Watling - the artist forged in Australia

He was Australia's first professional artist - the Scot whose paintings gave people here their first glimpse of life in the new British colony in the early 1790s.

But Thomas Watling - who was born 250 years ago today in Dumfries - was no explorer or pioneer.

He was a convicted forger sent to Australia as punishment.

Willie Johnston reports.
