Carstairs State Hospital officially opens after a refit

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has officially opened the new State Hospital at Carstairs.

The hospital treats some of Scotland's most violent and dangerous psychiatric patients.

It marks the end of a £90m rebuilding programme to upgrade the Lanarkshire facility.

The work was ordered because the site which opened in 1948 was no longer regarded as fit for purpose in both humanitarian and clinical terms.
