New balloon treatment helps save heart attack victims

A new service for heart attack victims has been saving lives.

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been taking patients straight to six specialist heart units around the country rather than to Accident and Emergency departments.

In the right circumstances, patients have had immediate surgery to clear blocked arteries rather than taking clot-busting drugs.

Bill Heirs had a tiny balloon inserted into a blocked artery and a stent inserted to allow the blood to flow again.

The new technique is said to give patients a better chance of survival.
