Varoufakis: EU a monster that needs civilising

The European Union is a "monster", which is deeply contemptuous of the democratic process, Greece's former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has told BBC HARDtalk.

But now the EU had been created, disassembling it would not fix the problem and would throw Europe into a "terrible abyss", he warned.

"There is no way that we as Europeans can escape a post-modern 1930s if this monster of the European Union disintegrates under the weight of its hubris and discontent for democracy," he said, adding that we need to civilise and democratise the "monster".
