Government launches BBC consultation

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has launched a public consultation on the BBC's future with a statement in the House of Commons.

Mr Whittingdale also said an independent review has found that the decriminalisation of the non-payment of the licence fee "would not be appropriate under the current funding model".

Alternatives to the licence fee - including subscription and a household tax - will be investigated as part of the review.
