Data Bill: Lord Carlile on Clegg and Lib Dem actions
The deputy prime minister "torpedoed" the so-called snoopers' charter bill as it was "just too difficult in political terms" within his party, a Lib Dem peer has claimed.
Lord Carlile, a former MP who was the official reviewer of terrorism legislation between 2001 and 2011, said he was disappointed party colleagues in both houses had opposed the legislation, and that could lead to "increased danger to the public".
Nick Clegg said last week the draft Communications Data Bill, giving powers to store online activity of UK residents, was "not going to happen" in its present form, while his party was in government.
