David Cameron to pledge referendum on the UK and Europe

David Cameron will promise to hold a referendum on whether the UK should stay in the European Union if the Conservatives win the next general election.

The pledge will be made in a long-awaited speech by the prime minister.

He will say that a Conservative government would re-negotiate Britain's EU membership and hold a vote by 2018.
