Electoral Commission on voting deadline queues review
The Electoral Commission wants a change in the law so people delayed in queues at polling stations will still be allowed to vote, so long as they arrived before 10pm.
Commission chairman Jenny Watson called for a "managed process where we have flexibility in the law" with new powers across the UK for electoral staff, following the example of changes in Scotland.
She estimated 1,200 people, in 16 constituencies, were denied the chance to vote in the 2010 general election, even though they were in the queue ahead of the deadline, but had not reached the polling booth.
