GCSEs: Ken Baker on English school exam changes
The former Conservative education secretary who brought in GCSEs claimed the exams sat in English schools today have become "watered down... and less rigorous".
Ken Baker, now Lord Baker, spoke as the coalition government announced major changes with a single end-of-course exam, fewer top grades and one exam board for each subject from 2017.
He compared exams with those sat in other countries, and he said: "I am in favour of the greater rigour in the basic subjects - in English, maths and science."
