Benefit cap suffers House of Lords defeat

The government has suffered a defeat in the House of Lords over its Welfare Reform Bill.

Peers supported a proposal from the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds to change the Bill, so that child benefit is excluded from the £26,000-a-year household benefit cap.

The amendment was approved by 252 votes to 237, a majority of 15.
