Ken Clarke's pledge to MPs on torture inquiry

The government has scrapped its long-awaited inquiry into whether there was any British complicity in the mistreatment of terror suspects by foreign countries.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the inquiry into the treatment of detainees could not continue because of Metropolitan Police investigations.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Clarke said the government ''fully intended'' to hold a judge-led inquiry into the issue at a more appropriate time.
