Andy Coulson quits Downing Street communications role

The prime minister's communications chief, Andy Coulson has resigned, blaming coverage of the News of the World.

Mr. Coulson said coverage had "made it difficult for me to give the 110% needed in this role".

He was under pressure over allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World where he was editor when a journalist and private investigator were illegally intercepting phone messages related to the royal family.

Mr. Coulson has always insisted he knew nothing about it, but today said the continuing controversy meant it had become impossible to do his job.

Nick Robinson reports.
