Former MP jailed for 18 months for false expenses claims

The former Labour MP David Chaytor has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for making fraudulent expenses claims.

Handing down his sentence, the judge said the scandal had shaken public confidence and breached the "high degree" of trust placed in MPs.

Mr Chaytor is the first politician to be convicted over the expenses scandal. Last month, he pleaded guilty to three charges of false accounting.

The Labour MP Barry Sheerman, a close friend, said it was totally out of character of him.
