Disabled MLA Andy Allen takes offence at DUP 'stand up' remark

A disabled MLA has taken offence after a former DUP minister told the Northern Ireland Assembly he was "standing up" for social housing rights.

Ulster Unionist MLA Andy Allen, who lost both legs in an explosion in Afghanistan, asked the DUP's Jonathan Bell to take back the remarks.

Mr Bell replied: "The point I am making is I am standing up, as you well know, for people in social housing need. That was the only meaning I had in that."
