On the Runs: 'Letters do not give immunity', says Villiers

It is of "great regret" that neither the first minister or justice minister were briefed about the On the Runs scheme, Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers has said.

Speaking to the Today programme, Ms Villiers admitted that she had been told of the scheme "very shortly" after being appointed to her current role.

She also stated that the On the Runs letters, sent to 187 republican paramilitary suspects telling them that they were no longer wanted by the police, "do not confer immunity from prosecution".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 28 February.
