Blinded prisoner: Criticism of Maghaberry staff 'not fair'

A prison watchdog has criticised Maghaberry Prison staff who watched but failed to intervene as a mentally ill prisoner blinded himself.

Director General of the Prison Service Sue McAllister said it was not fair to say staff had stood by and done nothing as Sean Lynch inflicted what the Prisoner Ombudsman has described as "extreme and shocking" self-harm over three days.

"They had raised the alarm, they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive," Sue McAllister told Good Morning Ulster's Karen Patterson.

"This is not a case of our staff not caring... This was an unprecedented case."
