Belfast attack 'intended to kill' says chief constable

An attack on officers investigating a robbery in West Belfast was "intended to cause serious harm... and to kill police officers" according to police.

Three officers were hurt when an explosive device was thrown at them as they attended the reported robbery at a bookmakers on the Shaw's Road.

One officer remains in hospital with serious arm injuries, and was expected to undergo surgery on Saturday.

Northern Ireland Chief Constable Matt Baggott, said it was "not just an attack on the police but on the whole community".
