Nick Hewer recalls getting 'drunk for a sixpence' in Swindon

"Getting drunk for a sixpence", his family's vets practice and a "gloomy but happy" house are among Nick Hewer's memories of the town where he was raised.

"We used to venture into the new town and go into The Glue Pot because in the corner there was a barrel full of scrumpy," he said.

"They'd give you a mug, you'd dip it in and you'd be drunk for a sixpence. It was terrible stuff."

As part of Swindon's celebrations of 175 years since the Great Western Railway was founded in the town, the TV personality toured some of his old haunts with BBC Points West's Will Glennon.
