Swindon marks 175 years of GWR railway works

Swindon is marking 175 years since Great Western Railway (GWR) directors gave the go-ahead for its railway works to be built in the town.

It followed engineer Sir Daniel Gooch's recommendation in February 1841, that the Wiltshire town would be the ideal place for the GWR works.

To mark the anniversary, a series of commemorative events celebrating the heritage of the town has been planned.

The BBC's Will Glennon reports.
