County Durham voters asked for views on devolution

Voters in County Durham have two weeks to decide whether they want to sign up to a deal which will give North East councils new powers and a directly-elected mayor.

Durham is the only part of the region being polled about the so-called devolution deal - even though the new mayor would cover an area from Berwick to Bishop Auckland.

Durham County Council leader, Councillor Simon Henig said the £230,000 survey will be taken seriously, but Michael Lloyd from the Campaign Against a North East Elected Mayor said the whole thing was a waste of time.
