Jarrow charity legend "Jarra Jim" burgled for just £1.20

The 94-year-old North East charity legend "Jarra Jim" has had his home in Jarrow ransacked and burgled.

Though shaken by his ordeal, Jim, a Dunkirk veteran, revealed the thieves only escaped with £1.20

"Jarra Jim", whose real name is Jim Purcell, still takes on the Great North Run every year and has raised many thousands of pounds for charity.

Northumbria Police said a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and had been released on bail.

Jim said he felt sorry for those responsible, adding "...they were obviously desperate".
