Suspected WW2 munition detonated on Tynemouth beach

A suspected World War Two munition has been detonated in a controlled explosion in Tynemouth.

The munition was found on Monday morning at Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend. Staff at the site were evacuated temporarily as a matter of precaution, police said.

Northumbria Police said it was taken to Longsands beach where it was detonated. A 200-metre cordon was put in place.
