Power surge brings Newcastle Metro network to a halt

Passengers had to be rescued by firefighters after a power surge brought parts of the Tyne & Wear Metro system to a halt.

Some were trapped in carriages inside tunnels for more than an hour.

Monument Station in Newcastle city centre was evacuated due to smoke. Services later resumed, although not to timetable.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the problem.
