When Shropshire was 'colder than the south pole' in record-breaking 1982 winter

It was the winter when snow and ice brought chaos to the roads and set records.

On January 10 1982, a temperature of -26.1C was recorded at what is now Harper Adams University in Newport, Shropshire - the lowest ever reached in England and a record that still stands.

According to the Shropshire Star, it meant Newport was colder than the south pole.
