Proposal to scrap Nottinghamshire district councils

Senior Conservative councillors in Nottinghamshire are proposing to scrap the county's current local authorities.

They want three new councils to be created instead: one based on an expanded city council and two new authorities in the east and west of the county.

Nottingham's current population is just over 300,000 but extending the boundaries to include the suburbs of Hucknall, Arnold, Beeston and West Bridgford would give the city a population of 600,000.

But the changes have been dismissed as a "stunt" by Labour.
