Liverpool celebrates its Chinese community

A blue plaque has been unveiled marking the foundation of the shipping company where many of Liverpool's Chinese settlers worked.

The plaque is on the New Capital restaurant in Nelson Street, which housed the Blue Funnel Shipping Office between 1950 and 1969.

The shipping line, founded in 1865, was the main British line which traded with China.

A small Chinese community had lived in Liverpool before the company was set up, but many of the Chinese seafarers employed by Blue Funnel settled in the city
