Drivers in Greater Manchester 'ignore' slip road closures

An average of four drivers per month have put workers lives at risk by ignoring road closure signs on the M60 and M62 in Greater Manchester, Highways England has said.

Figures show 95 motorists have driven along closed sections since 2014 when work began to upgrade sections to a smart motorway.

Smart motorways are operated by Highways England, which uses overhead gantries - also containing speed cameras - to direct traffic into open lanes and change speed limits depending on the volume of traffic.

Highways England will pass CCTV footage and the details of any drivers on to the police.
