Man slept with 17kg firework under bed in Salford

A man who went to sleep with a 17kg (37lb) firework under his bed every night has left firefighters in Salford "astonished".

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called by the man who told them he had been storing the 100-shot Brocade Crown with Blue Stars after winning it in a competition.

The "industrial-sized" firework is so powerful it is only used in professional displays, said a GMFRS spokesman.

Head of Protection Warren Pickstone said it would have been "devastating" had it gone off.

The device was removed from the man's home in Broughton and detonated "in a remote location".
