Shoppers drop in to drop off at Manchester sleep lab

Shoppers at Manchester's Arndale Centre are being offered the chance to take a quick nap as part of an experiment during the city's science festival.

The Chronarium is a combined sleep laboratory and art installation which includes huge hammocks, soothing sounds and ambient lighting for tired shoppers.

Each restorative sleep session lasts for 15 minutes with the aim for participants to wake up refreshed for city life.

Devised by artists Rachel Wingfield and Mathias Gmachi from London-based Loop PH, it has been developed in consultation with a leading sleep scientist to relax the brain for a quarter of an hour.

Manchester Science Festival runs from 20 to 30 October.
