Bury North MP claims young voters would 'risk sex exploitation'

A Conservative MP has claimed that lowering the voting age could increase the likelihood of young people "becoming victims of sexual exploitation".

Speaking in the Commons, Bury North MP David Nuttall said that "if 16 and 17-year-olds are given the vote, it increases the likelihood that they will be regarded and treated as adults".

Answering the Conservative member, Home Secretary Theresa May said she "would not link the issue of the age of voting with this question of child sexual exploitation".
