HMS Illustrious: BBC News archive report on board

HMS Illustrious had its entry into service brought forward so the ship could assist in the Falklands War effort.

The warship's deployment was so rushed that her commissioning ceremony took place at sea en route to the Falklands on June 20 1982. The ship was formally commissioned on her return.

While HMS Illustrious was not completed in time to see action during the Falklands conflict, it did play an important role patrolling the South Atlantic in the aftermath of the conflict.
