Kieran Milledge, 22, of no fixed address, beat the animal for over 20 minutes on the Greater Anglia train journey from Braintree to Witham, Chelmsford Magistrates' Court was told.

The incident happened on 10 October and the dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier called Ronnie, died three days later.

He was given a 21-week sentence for the animal cruelty charge, but has been jailed for a total of six months, when other offences, including possessing a bladed weapon, were taken into account.
