Record-breaking pumpkin 'to be turned into a boat'

A record-breaking pumpkin is to be turned into a boat, the Royal Horticultural Society has said.

The 95st (605kg) gourd was grown by Essex horticulturist Matthew Oliver from a seed bought for £1,250.

Its weight was confirmed at the Autumn Pumpkin Festival in Southampton at the weekend, when it was named the largest pumpkin to be grown outdoors in the UK.

Mr Oliver, who works at RHS Hyde Hall near South Woodham Ferrers, said: "I'm so happy, but I'm not sure at this stage if I'll ever do it again."

The RHS says the giant pumpkin will now be turned into a temporary boat, which Mr Oliver will sail on at RHS Garden Hyde Hall's lake.
