Composition marks 1953 Canvey Island floods for BBC Music Day

A young composer has written a piece of music to commemorate the devastating 1953 floods which hit his home Canvey Island.

Mitchell Tanner's work, "A Cold Night in 53", was unveiled as part of BBC Music Day.

Fifty-nine people died and 13,000 were evacuated from their homes when a tidal surge flooded the island.

Tanner, 22, a recipient of the John Barry scholarship, met up with survivors before composing the piece, which was commissioned by BBC Essex.

Last year, a mural was created on the island's sea wall to remember the floods.
