Carlisle's state-owned breweries and pubs in history trail

During World War One the government was so concerned by the alcoholic consumption of munitions workers in Carlisle it nationalised the local brewery and pubs.

It was an experiment in controlled drinking that lasted until the 1970s.

Now a Heritage Lottery Fund grant will pay for a history trail to remember the city's "state-managed" past.
