The Coventry Blitz: Scenes of devastation from 1940

Photographs taken after the German bombing raid on Coventry in 1940 show a bewildered population and a city in ruins.

The Coventry Blitz began on the night of 14 November 1940 and lasted 11 hours.

Reports at the time suggest the psychological impact on the city was as great as the physical damage, with survivors suffering what was called "a collective nervous breakdown."
