Diver winched down 40ft-deep canal shaft in Birmingham

A diver was winched down a narrow 40ft-deep shaft to begin work on a pump system under Birmingham's canal network.

Service work is being carried out on a pump and pipework, which is key to keeping water flowing around the city.

The pump, at Bordesley, feeds water to the Digbeth area and, in turn, to the Grand Union Canal, heading south past Solihull and Knowle towards Hatton Locks.

Neil Bedford, from the Canal & River Trust, said: “Most people probably don’t realise that below the surface there is a complex network of pumps and pipework that helps to re-circulate thousands of gallons of water every day to maintain water levels across the whole system."
