Black priest walks in 'slave' chains to promote remembrance

One of the first black women to be ordained in the Church of England has called for a national day of remembrance for slavery.

The Reverend Canon Eve Pitts of Holy Trinity Church, Birchfield, Birmingham, said she wrapped herself in chains and walked around her church to remind herself of her ancestors' suffering.

She said slavery still had an "emotional and psychological impact" on the African and Caribbean communities.

The service would highlight the strength, courage and perseverance of their ancestors, she added.
