Test run ahead of trams' return to Birmingham

The Midland Metro has had a test run on the streets in Birmingham ahead of the scheduled start of tram services in the city centre.

New services from Snow Hill to Bull Street on Sunday represent the first step in the opening of a £128m city centre tram extension and will mark the return of trams to Birmingham's streets for the first time in more than 60 years.

Works on the extension will also be scaled back in the run-up to Christmas so traders can present "the most attractive shopping environment possible," said Geoff Inskip, chief executive at transport authority Centro.
