D-Day veteran in Légion d'honneur medal surprise

A D-Day veteran who feared he may not live long enough to receive a war medal promised to him by the French government has been given it as a surprise in hospital.

Geoffrey Russon, from Cradley Heath, who was 19 when he was sent to war, has now received the Légion d'honneur 71 years after D-Day, after being told last year he would get a medal.

Daughter-in-law Yvonne Russon accepted it on his behalf at a ceremony at Birmingham Council House earlier before delivering it to Mr Russon at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.
