Network Rail boss says HS2 'essential'

Network Rail's chief executive David Higgins has told a conference looking at the HS2 rail link that the West Midlands "cannot do without" the controversial £42bn rail project.

Speaking in Birmingham, Mr Higgins said the London to Manchester route, which would cut through the West Midlands, was "essential" to cope with the ever-growing congestion on rail routes across the country.

Protesters are still urging the government to reverse its decision on the scheme, believing that it will cause more harm than good and damage the environment.
