Arctic Convoy man Joseph Jones receives honour

An 89-year-old World War II veteran from the Black Country has been officially recognised for his part in the Arctic Convoys.

Joseph Jones, from Rowley Regis, was presented with one of the new Arctic Stars, which were minted last year after a long fight by campaigners to have the part played of those in the convoys formally acknowledged.

Between 1941 and 1945, merchant ships helped deliver supplies to the Soviet Union to help fight off Hitler's armies.

About 3,000 men died while taking part in the convoys.

Mr Jones said he never believed he would see the day he received the honour.
