Virgin foils rail fan's Scotsman dream

A vintage train fan, who hoped to get a terrific view of Flying Scotsman as it travelled from London to York for the first time since its refit, had his moment of magic scuppered.

Ryan Allen was one of the legions who waited along the route to witness the iconic engine as she sped northwards.

But just as Flying Scotsman approached Little Bytham in Lincolnshire, where Mr Allen had been patiently waiting, a Virgin east coast train made an untimely intervention.

There was, however, consolation for Mr Allen when Virgin Atlantic later offered to fly him to the US city of Atlanta to see its "super busy rail network".
